Re: Getting frustrated by An Emergent Manifesto of Hope

Re: Getting frustrated by An Emergent Manifesto of Hope

Hi Brian,

Yes, the intention was not to deter people from reading the book, merely to give air to my frustrations - and perhaps not with the purest of motives!

I’m sure there are good reasons for both the book’s limited American outlook and its failure to grapple seriously with scripture. The question is whether that excuses a group of leaders that has presumed to write a ‘manifesto of hope’ presenting the ‘latest thinking’ for an ‘influential international movement’. Why are they seemingly so reluctant to bring biblical theology to the foreground?

Your observations about narrative and African culture are excellent, but can you really imagine African theologians, even with Brian McLaren as their sponsor, having any serious impact on the current emergent conversation? A lot will depend on how the post-colonial experience is interpreted - as you say, much of what is coming out of Africa has been tainted by modernism, and there are some well-worn ideological ruts that the wheels of a post-colonial theology can get stuck in. Still, maybe there is hope here!
