People say that if the universe is infinitely big then there must be other life forms. However, this is a logical fallacy. I call it the fallacy of wishful thinking. If the universe is infinitely large then there is room in it for anything we can imagine and more. I could equally suggest that the universe must contain some randomly occurring absolutely perfect pure diamond rocks exactly one metre cube in dimension. Somehow I doubt that most people would buy that. They would say that we only know of diamonds that are rough shapes and the idea of them being exactly one metre cube implies that they were made by an intelligence rather than randomly occurring. On the surface they are assuming that what applies to us applies elsewhere. But in reality, it is simply of no or little interest that anyone should find such a thing. This is because randomly occurring things, like rough stones on the beach, are not interesting to intelligent beings.
We can’t assume that we are the only life form in billions of galaxies but then we can’t assume that we are not. It is simply a non-question because it arises solely from wishful thinking.
