User biographies

A couple of people have suggested that it would be interesting, helpful, or entertaining to know a bit more about the shadowy people who contribute to Open Source Theology. So registered users now have the option of adding a biography page to their profile. The biography can be accessed by clicking on the username as it appears on posts and comments. A small icon on the ‘submitted by’ line indicates that the contributor has completed a biography and provides another link to the page.

This is purely optional. To add a biography click on My account in the menu on the right or on your username and then choose the Edit biography tab. You will be able to edit or delete the page later if you wish.

Re: User biographies

Thanks Andrew, this seems like a great addition. When I added my biography, it showed up as a “recent post”. I noticed Jacob’s did as well, so I clicked his to read it. The subsequent page is blank. If I click your name, I see your photo and the word “biography”, but no text. A bug, perhaps?

Re: User biographies

Hadn’t quite got it working properly. Should be OK now.

One question: should I allow people to comment on the bios?

Re: User biographies

If there is a way for each user to enable or disable that option, that might be nice. But if it is a universal “on” or “off” it may be best to direct people to use private messages for that kind of conversation?

Re: User biographies

I agree with jhimm.

And thanks Andrew.

Re: User biographies

It doesn’t look like it’s an option to comment on the bios anyway - solves that problem.

Re: User biographies

Thanks Andrew. Anonymity had some advantages but somehow this feels better!

Re: User biographies

Thanks Andrew, great idea! I was thinking about posting some sort of introduction before but never found the motivation.

Re: User biographies

hi, Andrew

social networking is undoubtedly a key element of internetworking and a typically post-modern development, I’m guessing, so good idea

…couple of enhancements you might consider: a tag or section that would allow users to browse a/the range completed bios

secondly, you might enable a few fields for links to users own (a) website (b) facebook / myspace entry (c) instant-messenger, which obviously encourages them to enter these internetworking links (I appreciate anyone could enter them within the main text form).

Such links also helps OST and associated user sites to be SEO’d for Google etc.
