The return of the king

My summary of NT Wright’s exhaustive multi-volume project Christian Origins and the Question of God has been moved to postost.net.

Christ's Presence in Zion

Wright’s work here certainly should challenge the unfortunate yet widespread belief that Jesus’ so called “second coming” has anything remotely to do with some future event as an ending to the “Christian world”.

Does Wright ever just come out and say it? That Jesus has returned?

What do you mean by 'returned'?

I think Wright would see the ‘coming’ language working in two ways: the coming of YHWH to Zion as part of the restoration of Israel (eg. the parables in which a king or master returns), and the coming of the Son of man to the ancient of days to be vindicated. He strongly denies that Jesus taught that he would ‘literally’ return to earth on a cloud.
